Concordia Club - Oktoberfest Through The Years

In 1967, as Canada's Centennial celebration approached, a group of German Canadians in Kitchener, Ontario were dreaming of an event to honour the one hundred years since the nation's birth. Plans emerged for an Oktoberfest - like those they remembered from the city squares of their homeland. The event would last four days and include dancing, singing, and good cheer.

Almost forty years later, the Concordia Club of Kitchener is set to commemorate that first North American Oktoberfest. Seeking a means of commemoration that befit the occasion, current club members have engaged artist Rick Murphy to create a 20" x 8" painting of that first Oktoberfest celebration and the four decades of Gemuetlichkeit that have followed.

With Phase One completed as an HRSDC-sponsored youth program, the project has now entered Phase Two which is open to community and corporate sponsorship of this historic opportunity.
Sponsors to-date include Piller's Sausages, the City of Kitchener, RBC, Human Resources and Skills Development Canada, Molson Canada, Paul Tuerr Construction, D&H Woodworking, and George Piller and family.

The "Oktoberfest through the Years" commemorative painting project with Kitchener's Concordia Club is scheduled for unveiling in October 2007.
